UIUC cPanel WordPress Tutorial

Table of Contents

Introduction

Unfortunately, not many know that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign provides mechanisms to freely create as many websites as you want. This tutorial will guide you through the process of creating a WordPress website using UIUC’s cPanel.

One method is through Illinois Publish (publish.illinois.edu), and the other is through UIUC cPanel (web.illinois.edu). The benefit of the latter method is that you can get a domain name like customname.web.illinois.edu, which is more presentable than publish.illinois.edu/customname (Illinois Publish), and still far more presentable than customname.wordpress.org (public WordPress). Furthermore, Illinois Publish has a far more restricted set of themes. This tutorial will guide you to creating a simple WordPress site with an About page and a post. This is completely free: all you need is a current student netID. Here are some notes about this tutorial you should keep mind of:

  • This is a protip! These will contain sidenotes that will be useful for you in the future.
  • This is a warning! You ignore these messages at your own peril. If you ignore these, you’re likely to get a headache.

With that said, let’s get started!
